SUMMARY:Resilience Amid Resistance
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to a living history event on North Main Street in Harrisonburg on May 17.  \nDuring a special dedication ceremony in front of the Federal Courthouse event coordinators will unveil the “Resilience Amid Resistance” state historical marker\, commemorating the legal battles that reshaped public education across the Commonwealth.  \nThis marker is the result of the dedication and civic engagement of former Spotswood High School students Pria Dua and Elizabeth Kidd\, who developed it through their research on school desegregation while working on the Knocking Down Walls documentary. Created alongside Cherith Bradshaw\, Miriam Loucks\, and Samantha Syptak\, their documentary received national recognition on Good Morning America\, helping to bring this pivotal history to a broader audience. \nHonored Guests and Speakers \nThis event will be more than a ceremony—it will be an opportunity to hear directly from those who lived this history and paved the way for future generations: \nBetty Kilby – Lead plaintiff in Kilby v. Warren County \nAlex-Zan – The youngest member of the “Charlottesville 12” in Allen v. Charlottesville \nAnne Holton – Former Virginia Secretary of Education and professor at George Mason University  \nTo fully honor this legacy\, the City of Harrisonburg will close North Main Street and the surrounding radius\, transforming the area into a gathering place for reflection\, remembrance\, and recognition. \nA Companion Museum Exhibit by RCPS Students \nThe dedication is just the beginning. Later that day\, at 12:30 PM at Rocktown History\, students from the “Farmville Tour Guides Project” will present a companion exhibition on the fight for school equality across Virginia.  \nBoth events are free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Writing What You Know by Author\, Cara Achterberg
DESCRIPTION:“Writing What You Know\,” \nby Author\, Cara Achterberg \nCara Achterberg is the author of seven (soon to be eight) books including fiction\, nonfiction\, and memoir.   \nShe lives in Maurertown\, VA with her husband\, three rescue dogs\, and a rotating cast of foster dogs and cats.  When not chasing after dogs\, she can be found hiking\, kayaking\, visiting wineries\, or hanging out on her porch with a good book or a good friend. \nCara is also a compulsive blogger\, occasional freelance writer\, and a writing coach.  She co-founded “Who Will Let the Dogs Out”\, a national nonprofit to raise awareness and resources for shelter dogs and the people who fight for them. She will talk about how writing what you know helps you write authentically\, and following your heart will bring writing to life\, and may even launch a career! \nNew Market Area Library \nNovember Adult Program \nSunday\, November 17 @ 2:00 p.m. \n
