Ruritan Happenings: Here We Grow!

Do you know the impact that Ruritans have in your community? At the March 1, 2022 meeting, Zone 3 Governor Sharon Rexrode presented the numbers to the Fulks Run Ruritan Club, and the impact is worth mentioning. Zone 3 comprises Broadway/Timberville, Singers Glen, Tenth Legion/Mountain Valley, Linville-Edom, Fulks Run, and the Bergton Ruritan clubs. In total, our zone invested $73,097 and 10,770 hours back into our local communities. Further, our district (including all clubs serving Rockingham, Page, and Shenandoah counties) put a total of $296,493 and 51,536 hours into our communities.

These numbers for last year show that, even during a time greatly impacted by Covid, our local Ruritan clubs are having a significant impact locally. Consider too that the number of people involved in civic and community service organizations has been dwindling for many years now. Now imagine how much more of an impact we could make if our volunteer organizations could grow.

The Fulks Run Ruritan Club did just that at our March 1 meeting, where we installed three new members! Each new member was presented a pin and a t-shirt from the club. We are pleased to welcome Amy Funk, Lindsey Lang, and Travis Fulk, and we are looking forward to working with them on our many projects this year.

Speaking of projects, it has been a joy watching our local ball teams, community members, and visitors enjoy our park since the club purchased it in 1989. To help ensure that our beautiful park remains a highlight in our community, we are investing in some major improvements this year and are excited to see these plans move forward. Please keep an eye out for new playground equipment coming soon as well as walking trail. We can’t wait to bring these much-needed improvements to our community!

Finally, at the March meeting, the club also welcomed Broadway Police Department Chief Doug Miller and Patrolman Kolby Walters who gave a brief presentation at the meeting. The two officers talked about their careers in law enforcement, current issues impacting our local communities, and school safety. The club enjoyed the presentation and appreciated them taking the time to speak with us. Thanks to all our law enforcement for all they do to keep our communities safe!

Dr. Martin Luther King once observed, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?” At our March meeting, we were reminded of this call for service as we listened to our local law enforcement discuss keeping our communities safe and as we discussed our own current slate of projects. It’s going to be a very busy year, and we look forward to not only bringing our traditional events to the community this year but also to adding some new amenities to our treasured park.

Upcoming

The club is planning to sell chicken BBQ on April 2 to benefit Valley Lightening, 10U Baseball. Another chicken BBQ is planned on April 9 to benefit Valley Freedom Girls’ Softball Team. You can keep up on the progress and find information about upcoming events by checking the Fulks Run Ruritan Club Facebook page.

Club President, Lena Custer, installs new members Amy Funk, Travis Fulk, and Lindsey Lang.

Tammy Cullers

Tammy Fulk Cullers is a Jill-of-all-trades and hopes to (one day) master one. She is a middle school English teacher by day and a mystery writer by night. She also morphs into a newspaper publisher the last week of every month. You’ll find her playing the piano at Broadway Baptist Church, volunteering at the Plains District Memorial Museum, haunting the Village Library, and occasionally acting on stage with the Off Broadway Players. She loves words, cats, woodstoves, and books. Her future goals include learning to do cryptic crossword puzzles, owning a bookstore, and (eventually) becoming Jane Marple.
