I recently turned 76 and realized that I have been operating W W Motor Cars & Parts, Inc. for over half my life. During this time, we have done over 900 cars. We have worked for Motor Racing Drivers and owners, people from the FBI, CIA, NSA and some I can’t tell you about. We’ve even worked for some “mob” characters and many nice car owners.
I decided that there is only one more car that I want to build for myself as I am supposed to be retired. The car I want to build is a 1915 era Speedster (think vintage racecar). However, instead of buying new parts to build it, I decided that I want to build it with old parts I have laying around. Of course, I will have to buy a few things but so far, I have the frame, front and rear suspension, steering, motor & transmission, original 1915 leather bucket seats, rear axle, original gas tank, radiator, etc. So far, I think I have spent around $20.00 for bolts, etc.
Part of the enjoyment is trying to adapt parts from “junk”, which is how most original racers were built. Working on expensive, original antiques is sometimes frustrating when it comes to locating original parts or making the parts from scratch. I can’t believe how excited I got when I found an original “Buggy Step” to fasten it to the frame so I can get in the car when finished.
All of us who are car crazy have different things that we enjoy. Some like research, others just driving and some like to do their own work. It’s a great hobby for any age and about anything you do with a vintage car or truck is greatly rewarding.
