Due to the lack of measurable rainfall, the Shenandoah River and local lakes were low and clear during April. And it looks like the same conditions will continue into May.
Bass will begin spawning the last week of April and will continue to do so through the month of May. The low water conditions are in a bass’s favor because they don’t have to fight strong river currents to spawn. Remember all bass don’t spawn at the same time.
You can plan on bass being found in shallow water during the month of May, but getting them to take your presentation can be a challenge. Bass like hard bottom areas to spawn. Look for downed trees in shallow areas, these offer protection for spawning bass.
Bass will continue to hit reaction lures, but for most anglers the old Texas rigged lizard is the favorite during the spawn. I prefer a jig with a chunk trailer. Perhaps you have your favorite lure during this time.
Remember if you happen to catch a spawning bass, get a picture and release her as quickly as you can. They already have enough stress; they don’t need to be handled for long periods of time. Good luck fishing in May!!
Do you have the assurance that when you die, or if Jesus returned today, you would go to heaven. Jesus says, “I tell you the truth, unless you are born again you cannot see the kingdom of God” (John 3:3). If you have never accepted Jesus Christ as the Lord and Savior of your life, I would like to encourage you to start thinking about this important decision. For it will determine where we spend eternity, either heaven or hell. Realize that God loves you and has a plan and a purpose for your life. If Jesus came back five minutes ago, where would you be?
May God bless you all!
Mike
