Scouting for Food is a service project many boy scout and cub scout units participate in. In Northern Rockingham County for 3 units, it is a big deal. For two Saturdays, Nov 4th and Nov 11th from 9am-12pm, these three units were at Walmart and Food Lion in Timberville to collect donations from shoppers and at the Farmer’s Market in Broadway for drop offs.
Cub Scouts from Pack 1 collected over 800 pounds each Saturday. Boy Scouts from Troop 124 collected over 800 and 600 pounds over the 2 weekends. Boy Scouts from Troop 1 donated over 250 pounds from donations that were dropped off. Thirty nine scouts from the three units collected over 3340 pounds of donations that went to five food pantries in our Northern Rockingham County.
They were excited to help Lacey Spring Food Pantry and Singers Glen Food Pantry, plus 3 church food pantries at Broadway Cornerstone, Broadway Baptist, and Broadway Presbyterian. Whether the food donations go to sponsor families, Thanksgiving Baskets or stores for families to come in for assistance, the scouting units made an impact in their area with the community’s support, and it was appreciated.
