Twin Spruce Custom Cutting
Interview with Glendon Wenger
Please note that Twin Spruce is booked out until 2025. Glendon graciously gave me the interview to participate in my local butcher shop series, but save the info for another season.
Location & Contact Info: 134 Muddy Creek Rd., Rockingham, VA 22802
(540) 742-2226
Heading west out of Harrisonburg on Rt. 33, just as you get to Hinton, turn right onto Muddy Creek Road and you will find them directly on the right. The butcher shop is located at the back of the cluster of agricultural structures.
Owners: Glendon and Melissa Wenger
Years in the business: 8
A little history: “We built this shop in December of 2015 – we had just started on our own doing some of our butchering with equipment we had bought. It was something I had always wanted to do for myself and it became more than we could keep up with – people wanted us to work for them, so we decided to look at our operation.” The Wengers were dairy farmers and needed to make decisions about where to place their focus. “Like so many other businesses, when covid hit it, it went a lot farther than I thought it was going to.” Today they are not milking but are still farming.
What they offer: Custom processing of beef and pork only; Twin Spruce does not offer wild game or retail cuts.
Hours: Monday, Wednesday, Friday; hours may vary – give them a call to start the process.
Things to note: Bring your own boxes or coolers at pickup. “If there’s a problem with the meat, I appreciate knowing about it so I can make it right to [the customer]. Quality matters to us. I want to try to work for the customer.”
A few more thoughts: “We would like to express that we are grateful for our employees – they are the backbone of our business and we couldn’t do it without them. We also appreciate the community and we have met a lot of good people. Working with family and friends has been a great blessing.”
