The Broadway Scoutmaster
Many boys grew up in the Town of Broadway
With Bob Driver, Scoutmaster, leading the way
Hiking and camping, and other Scout skills
Bob lead them all, up over the hills.
He took them to camp and taught them their pride,
Then carved every one of them a neckerchief slide
Each year he searched throughout every Troop,
Looking for a Scout, the smallest of his group.
On Wednesday, at camp, right after lunch
Bob lined up the small boys in their own little bunch
Some boys are too heavy, some boys are too tall
But with help from the camp, he selected the smallest of all
When, finally, the smallest has been selected,
Bob presents the slide that he has perfected.
“Old Sarge” is the style and resembles a Top Sargent,
who in the military command controls the regiment
Over his Scouting Career some 50 slides were awarded
In discussions with adults, many were hoarded
Some by Scouters you wouldn’t believe ever qualified
But all who received one remember being gratified
Bob’s Junior Leaders were always elected
By the Scouts in the Troop whose program they perfected
An annual weekend at Bob’s Mountain cabin was earned
To develop a program they lead using skills they had learned
A successful Troop and active youth program
Was Bob’s contribution to the town he called home
Bob drew satisfaction from their lifetime friendship
And worldwide improvement from their scholarship
