As the year winds down and we embrace the season of giving, I find myself reflecting on the many ways we can give back to our community—not just during the holidays but throughout the year. Living in the Broadway, Timberville, and New Market areas has shown me the power of neighbors helping neighbors and how small acts of service can lead to big changes.
My own journey in community service includes volunteering as a contributor to The Chimney Rock Chronicle and serving on the Broadway Hometown Partnership board. These roles have allowed me to connect with the heartbeat of our community and witness firsthand the incredible work being done by so many dedicated people. But I also know there’s always room for more hands, more voices, and more hearts willing to serve.
We are fortunate to live in an area rich with opportunities to make a difference. Whether you’re new to the area or have lived here your whole life, there’s a role for you in making our community stronger. Here are just a few ways you can get involved:
Join a Civic Group
Civic organizations like the Lions Club, Rotary, and Ruritan Clubs are pillars of our community, tackling everything from food insecurity to scholarships for local students. These groups thrive on the dedication of their members. For example, the Broadway Lions Club works tirelessly to assist those with vision and hearing impairments, while the Rotary Club supports local and international projects that promote health, education, and economic development.
The Ruritan Club, with its deep roots in rural communities like ours, focuses on improving the quality of life in small towns. By joining one of these organizations, you not only make a difference but also form lasting connections with others who share your passion for service.
Support the Broadway Hometown Partnership
As a board member of the Broadway Hometown Partnership, I’ve seen how vital it is to have community involvement in our efforts to revitalize and promote Broadway. From organizing events like parades and festivals to supporting local businesses, this group is dedicated to making Broadway a vibrant place to live, work, and visit. Your ideas, energy, and enthusiasm could be exactly what we need to push these initiatives even further.
Volunteer with First Responders
Our volunteer fire departments and rescue squads are some of the most essential and selfless services in the area. These men and women respond at all hours of the day and night to ensure our safety, often without pay. Becoming a volunteer firefighter or EMT is one of the most impactful ways to serve. If the rigorous training isn’t feasible for you, there are still ways to help, such as assisting with fundraising events or administrative tasks.
Lend a Hand to Nonprofits
There are countless other ways to make a difference, whether it’s mentoring youth, assisting at local food pantries, or supporting animal rescue organizations. Nonprofits across the Shenandoah Valley rely on volunteers to carry out their missions. A few hours of your time can mean the world to those in need.
Why Serve?
Some might wonder why serving others is so important. I’ll tell you why it matters to me. Community service isn’t just about what you give; it’s also about what you receive. The friendships formed, the sense of purpose gained, and the pride in knowing you’ve contributed to something bigger than yourself are rewards beyond measure.
When we give back, we create a ripple effect. Our actions inspire others, who in turn inspire even more people to get involved. That’s how we build a stronger, more connected community.
How to Get Started
If you’re unsure where to begin, start by reaching out to local organizations. Many groups, like the Lions Club, Rotary, or Broadway Hometown Partnership, have websites or social media pages where you can learn about their missions and events. You can also attend a meeting or community event to see where you might fit in.
Another option is to simply ask around. Word of mouth is powerful in our close-knit community, and someone you know likely has a connection to a group or cause that aligns with your interests.
As we enter the new year, I encourage you to think about how you can make a difference in Broadway, Timberville, New Market, or wherever you call home. Whether it’s an hour a month or a more significant commitment, your time and talents are valuable.
Let’s work together to make our community even better. After all, there’s no greater gift than the one that uplifts others.
