WHAT’S NEW AT THE MUSEUM?
“BONNETS AND SOLES”
Collection
On loan from
Betty Miller Driver
Broadway, VA
Betty Driver, a long-time volunteer at Plains District Museum, is an avid collector of Valley memorabilia. The current exhibit features her collection of 19thc bonnets and shoes. She began this collection in 2015 as a means of collecting costumes for the 250th anniversary of Radar’s Lutheran Church in Timberville. The collection consists of black bonnets worn in the Valley primarily for religious reasons and the more colorful print bonnets worn by domestic workers for cooking, cleaning, and outdoor activities.
The picture below shows one exhibit item of particular interest, a pair of child’s shoes outfitted with their own rain boots.
