June 28, 1926 – The first *Chautauqua program for this year was given at 2:30 today in the tent in the North West corner of the Brethren Church yard. The next program was given at 8:00 tonight. They were well attended.
June 11, 1932 – A lawn party was held at the Timberville school house tonight for the benefit of county nurses. About $160.00 worth was sold.

Chautauqua were programs that provided entertainment and culture for communities. They often featured teachers, speakers, musicians, showmen, preachers, and other specialists of the day. They were very popular in the late 19th and 20th centuries. Teddy Roosevelt was quoted as saying that Chautauqua is “the most American thing in America.”
