Two Broadway High School graduates received scholarships from Broadway Hometown Partnership. This is the first year these scholarships were offered, and they include a $1500 scholarship for students planning to attend a two-year vocational, technical school, or a community college and a $1050 scholarship for students planning to attend a 4-year college.
The two-year scholarship recipient was Julia Haviland, and the four-year scholarship went to Ava Churchill.
While this scholarship requires a minimum GPA of 3.2, the selection of the two recipients was based on their community involvement through leadership, integrity, drive, and citizenship within their communities, school and workplaces.
Additionally, students completed an application which included a teacher recommendation, community member recommendation and a personal statement (500 – 800 words) about why it’s important to be involved in their local communities and how they have been involved, personally.
BHP members Lisa Zwiegler and Canessa Collins visited Broadway high school in February to meet students and to make them aware of the scholarship. Lisa says, “We were pleased with the interaction we had and are hoping for more applicants next year. This year we had nine and we are pleased with the turn out for our first year.”
BHA had a reception for the student winners at their board meeting in June. Contributing businesses were also invited. Businesses who participated were: Broadway Hometown Partnership (BHP) – $500 to both the 2 year and the 4-year scholarship. Other donors included: 2-year Scholarship –Grandle Funeral Home, Hunter Bottling Company, Top Bead Welding, The Cottage on Louisa, WBTX, and an anonymous donor. 4-year Scholarship – Hunter Bottling Company, the Cottage on Louisa, WBTX, and an anonymous donor.
