Legend says George Washington National Forest is composed of the less pretty parts of Virginia not worthy of being included in Shenandoah National Park. Perhaps it’s lucky for us hikers that Big Schloss didn’t make the cut, because it’s certainly one of the best hikes in GWNF (SNP really missed out) and one of my favorite hikes in general, especially to do with a group. It’s got stellar views and is a moderate trek of about four and a half miles, out and back. There’s no entrance fee and it’s dog-friendly, so bring along your pups.
Parking here is relatively plentiful being that it’s in the Wolf Gap Recreation Area. That said, the last time I visited this area to hike Tibbet Knob, I had to park on the side of the road, and a few others behind me got turned away by a park ranger there. There usually isn’t a ranger there, but if you’re coming to this area on a Saturday when the campgrounds are full, arrive early in the day, or go on week day.
During the weekend, this trail is pretty popular so you aren’t likely to find much solitude here, but I went on a random Monday in April and had the entire hike to myself. Living the life, right? Furthermore, the trail was brimming with blooming flowers, making it quite a colorful trek.
The hardest part of the trail is at the start. The first mile is all uphill but then it’s smooth sailing once you reach the ridgeline. Frankly, I almost found the actual summit underwhelming because just trekking along the ridgeline afforded me plenty of lovely views that left me quite content. That said, the rocky summit was a nice place to sit back and enjoy a cool drink and some snacks while soaking in the views, and the bridge is just pretty cool.
According to the ever faithful Google “Schloss” is German for “castle, palace, manor, or chateau” and Big Schloss is certainly a hike worthy of Shenandoah National park royalty. Fortunately, none of us need to be kings or queens to enjoy this hike!
