September 1st has arrived and the door has opened for autumn to appear.
Even though we had some rain last month, setting aside the drought for just a bit, some of the leaves are turning, and the grass is still a bit crispy.
The wildflowers are starting to go to seed, the butterflies are still soaring.
The bees and hummingbirds are still buzzing about. It makes me sad to know that, soon, the hummingbirds will be leaving. It could be my imagination, but at the end of each season, a hummingbird, or several, would hover close to my face, before taking off for the last time. I’d like to think it was a thank you, and see you next year.
One of my favorite flowers, Queen Anne’s Lace, are all going to seed. Each stage, from lacy white blossoms, to seed, are picture perfect.
The peaches have all ripened, the grapes are about done. This year’s peaches were delicious. Although, we shared the lower branches of peaches with the deer, and if we weren’t quick about picking, the crows and bees got some others!
My daughter is really getting into canning and preserving this year, along with making her herbal salves, tinctures, and remedies. Canning is not my favorite thing anymore, so I am happy to have our trees supply the bounty, for my daughter to put up! Thanks to her, I have a nice supply of canned peaches, pesto, grape jam, pickles,various floral jellies. And coming soon bacon/bourbon jelly! That might be a new taste sensation!
Working on a new generation of chickens. Only two new babies- silkie/Australorp crosses, are joining the flock. Future egg layers for Callen’s little egg business.
Fall hasn’t quite hit yet, but my one horse has started growing his coat back way early. Seems that happens every year, so the hot days are not his favorite. The donkey is the very last to shed out, and the last to grow back. His favorite thing on hot days is taking a dust bath, just like the chickens! Surrounded by a cloud of dust, he reminds me of Pigpen of the Charlie Brown cartoon!
School has started back up, summer seemed to have flown by faster this year. Not only for me, but for the kids and teachers too, I am sure!
School, fall festivals, pumpkins, football games, Homecoming parades- all things to look forward to in Fall of 2024. Plus, cool, crisp weather!!
All is well at Mountain Meadows, looking forward to what this month has in store.
