The Off-Broadway Players have been committed to providing quality theatre and entertainment to the local community since 2016, and this year is no exception. As they prepare for their third and final major production of 2024, they are thrilled to announce that “Broadway” is returning to Broadway! Since the pandemic in 2020, the Off-Broadway Players (OBP) have been eager to include a musical in their seasonal lineup but have struggled to find volunteers to musically direct such productions—until now. James D. Kiser, a local native from Harrisonburg, approached the OBP with an exciting proposal: a musical—specifically, “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat!” The Off-Broadway Players eagerly seized the opportunity.
“Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” is a popular musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. It tells the Old Testament story of Joseph, the youngest and favorite son of Jacob. Joseph’s gift for interpreting dreams led to betrayal by his eleven jealous brothers, who sold him into slavery. In slavery, Joseph found favor with his master but was wrongfully accused of adultery and thrown into prison. While in prison, Joseph’s talents were recognized by the Pharaoh, who summoned Joseph to interpret his own dreams. Pharaoh pardoned Joseph and appointed him to oversee Egypt during seven years of bounty followed by famine. During the famine, Joseph’s brothers traveled to Egypt for help, leading to the family’s reunion.
James D. Kiser comes to the OBP for the first time in this role, as Director, and is directing his first major musical production; a double debut, if you will. Kiser is the founder of VOICE (Vocalists Offering Inspirational Community Enrichment), a local non-profit music organization established in 2008; and directed them until 2022. Since before 2016, he was a familiar face on community stages in the area, participating in performances from New Market to Waynesboro, including roles in: Les Misérables (Bishop/Legles), Die Fledermaus (Dr. Falke), The Sorcerer (Sir M. Pointextre), La Jolie Parfumeuse (Poirot), and The Wizard of Oz (Cowardly Lion). But James’ musical theatre journey truly began when he portrayed Joseph in Spotswood High School’s production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
“…When I portrayed Joseph, it was the first time I felt connected with a character that resonated with my own headspace – as a teenager. I’m so excited to have the privilege and chance to direct the very musical that captivated me in the first place. The cast, crew, and everyone who’s been involved are so talented and have been fantastic to work with! It’s felt a lot like coming home…” ~ James D. Kiser
Rehearsals for this upcoming production of Joseph have been underway since mid-August with Kiser at the reigns. Alongside him have been many folks involved with pre-planning, backstage, and rehearsals, including Kiser’s friend Melanie Kulas, an experienced Stage Manager. J.W. Fiske, an OBP veteran, has also been at the forefront with his expertise as a Technical Director and Set/Props Design. Not to mention the incredibly talented 22-member cast & 13-member crew [audio, lights, and stage] have all been hard at work to bring this production to life!
“…This production has provided such a healthy outlet to step out of my daily grind and express energy through music and dance. I’ve also connected with this wonderful, supportive group of people who come from so many walks of life but who share a passion for the arts and this community…” ~ Mackenize Grimes, Ensemble
“…This show holds a special place in my heart. Its music played an early part in my love for musical theatre, and I remember seeing James Kiser playing Joseph at Spotswood High. It’s a bit of a full circle and certainly a privilege to star in this show under his patient, encouraging, and inclusive direction. I’m so grateful to everyone for their work and support. I am so excited for this show to open…” ~ Andrew N. Hill, Simeon
“…I was previously in a production of Joseph in my hometown, so it has been so rewarding to participate in this musical for a second time. This is my first OBP production and it’s been a joyful experience. Our director brings such an uplifting energy to rehearsals, and I admire my incredibly talented cast members. Another sweet bonus has been to experience this alongside my partner, who’s portraying a Brother. We can’t wait to bring this upbeat show to Broadway…” ~ Simone Cameon, Narrator
