In a community where service and kindness are truly appreciated, one local man’s dedication has not gone unnoticed. Broadway Baptist Church pastor, Donnie Owen, has been honored with the Modern Woodmen of the World “Hometown Hero” award, recognizing his years of faithful service to both his church and the wider community.
Born and raised in Southside Virginia, Owen comes from a long line of Southern Baptist preachers—both his father and grandfather answered the same call to ministry. After graduating from high school, he chose a different path of service, enlisting in the United States Army. There, he served as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division before later becoming a sergeant in a light infantry reconnaissance platoon.
Following his military service, Owen attended Chowan Baptist College. It was during a summer break, while working at a local hospital, that he met the love of his life, Alesia, a registered nurse at Community Hospital. The two quickly formed a lasting bond and were married in 1991. Together, they have raised six children, building a life centered on faith, family, and service.
In 2002, while working for a telephone company, Owen felt a calling that would shape the next chapter of his life—the call to preach. He pursued theological studies at Liberty University and The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary before being ordained as a Southern Baptist minister.
Since 2003, Donnie and Alesia Owen have faithfully served in three Baptist churches across Virginia. For the past 15 years, they have made their home at Broadway Baptist Church, where their impact reaches far beyond the pulpit.
Each Wednesday evening, the couple can be found in the church kitchen, preparing meals for those attending Bible study. Their ministry extends into the homes of shut-ins, where they not only deliver meals but sometimes cook for individuals in their homes Whether it’s offering a warm meal, a ride to a doctor’s appointment, or support during a medical procedure, the Owens have become a steady presence in the lives of many.
In addition to their church work, Donnie and Alesia also operate a catering food truck known as The Hummingbird, further sharing their gift of hospitality with the community.
Those who know Donnie Owen will agree the “Hometown Hero” title fits him perfectly—not because he seeks recognition, but because he lives out his calling in quiet, meaningful ways every day.
Donnie gives back to the community with gratefulness and joy. He says, “I’m happy God has a place for me and Alesia in His great plan. We have experienced the love of God through an amazing church family of believers who are faithful to make Jesus Christ known.”
