We are Sam and Kim Wilkins, and we are retired full time RVers in search of 70-degree weather. Our home is now a 42-foot fifth wheel.
We sold our home and most of our belongings in order to see what this great US has to offer by way of beautiful scenery. Along the way we have met some of the nicest people.
It is my birthday today and I am on the island of Kauai, Hawaii. I still can’t believe it. When I was little, if someone would have told me I would be here today spending my 67th birthday in such a beautiful place I would have laughed out loud! I am here with my friend Barbara, and her birthday is in two days. We decided to spend our birthdays somewhere special. Barb used to live here almost 40 years ago and talked about it often which made me very curious to see these places. I would’ve never dreamed my curiosity would actually bring me here.

We didn’t know what to expect after hearing all the news about how TSA was so backed up and the lines were taking hours to go through. So far, I’ve been through two security checkpoints, and they all have been nothing but nice and the wait was no more than 30 minutes. I am hoping and praying my luck continues as there will be two more on the trip back. Hope I didn’t just jinx myself!
We landed on the island of Oahu in Honolulu for our first leg of this trip. We’d watched news about a Kona storm heading toward the islands and didn’t know what to expect. It was rainy but our plane landed fine. We weren’t going to let a little rain put a damper on our birthday trip.
There is so much to see and do here. We stayed in Waikiki and walked to the beach. I got to put my feet in the Pacific. We went snorkeling and saw some very large turtles and many fish. We attended a luau where I received my first lei! The food was good, but the entertainment was great!
Barb reconnected with church friends from years past. We attended Sunday service at Pearl City Baptist Church. Afterwards we enjoyed a lunch meeting with three lovely ladies. Then a few days later we met a lovely couple for brunch, I had my omelet with Spam. When in Hawaii! A trip to the North Shore gave us some sunny beach time and more toes in the sand and the Pacific.
We also visited Pearl Harbor. My FIL was stationed there during the bombing on that fateful day, December 7, 1941. Such a somber moment to be there to honor our fallen soldiers.
We are now on Kauai which is called the “Garden Isle” and it is so green and lush. We walked 2 miles to see a waterfall; it was so very beautiful. We’ve planned to go on a whale watching tour soon.
Keeping in touch with family and friends while here has been tricky with the 6 hour time difference but FaceTime, texts and phone calls keeps me connected.
To say I feel blessed seems an understatement. My heart is so very full! Many family members and friends have reached out to wish me “Happy Birthday”. I am at one of the most beautiful places on earth. God is so good!
Blessings till next time.
Kim
