ALUMNI BAND!

During the BHS Varsity football game on September 13, 2024, we will celebrate 20 years of the BHS Fighting Gobbler Regiment Marching Band participating in Marching Band Competitions.  This year also marks the 15th year that the BHS Band has been recognized as a Virginia Honor Band, based on their superior achievements with Assessment performances in both Marching Band and Concert Band.

We are inviting all alumni back to help us celebrate, and to honor past BHS Band Directors.  Please dust off those horns and join us in the stands to play the fight song with the current members of the BHS Band!!!  The JFHMS Band Side by Side event will be also be held the evening of the 13th, and the BHS Band Band Boosters will be a holding a raffle to raise money to support our current Band programs.

Meet the Directors

The current BHS and JFH Band and Choral Directors are excited to lead rehearsals again, preparing our ensemble members for Veterans Day and Holiday celebrations, Concerts, Musicals and more. We also would like to welcome the newest member of the JFHMS Music Department staff, Georgia Orfanides.  Be sure to say hello when you see us out and about, we love making music with your kids!

Mx. Cameron O. Flake

BHS Director of Bands

Cameron Flake is the Director of Bands at Broadway High School. They were previously the Assistant Director of Bands from 2020-2022. Before Broadway, they were the Director of Bands at Fort Defiance High School from 2014-2020. During their tenure at both schools, Cameron has consistently fostered a collaborative ensemble space to allow students access to teamwork and creative problem solving. They have cultivated ensembles that earn excellent and superior ratings at VBODA sponsored events. Cameron served as the VBODA District V Instrumental Representative from 2019-2020 as well as other school district leadership roles, including music department head throughout their 11 years in music education. They attended Virginia Tech from 2010 to 2014 where they received their Bachelor of Arts in Music Education & Saxophone Performance as well as their Masters of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Music Education. At Virginia Tech they studied with Travis J. Cross, Andrew Putnam, David Jacobson, and Stephen King. In their spare time they like to play video games and longboard with their wife, Khalia, who has been teaching Color Guard at Broadway High School since 2022. Cameron also loves creating leather commissions, like wallets, watch bands, belts, and key chains.

“Music is so vital to our humanity, and I’m honored to help our students explore an expression of our humanity.” – Cameron Flake

Anna Goodwyn

BHS Director of Choirs

Anna Goodwyn is the Director of Choirs at Broadway High School. She graduated from James Madison University with a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Music Education. In addition to singing in various choral ensembles at JMU, Anna was a part of JMU’s Opera productions of Faust and Don Giovanni. She also long term subbed at Marshall High School in Northern Virginia during her last year of college. In her spare time, Anna coaches the summer and winter swim team in Broadway, does the vocal coaching for the Musical, and sings with two separate teacher choirs. She and her husband welcomed a beautiful baby girl right before school started!

“My favorite part of teaching choir is reminding students of the power of music. Remembering why you sing will always be the foundation of an amazing choir.” – Anna Goodwyn

Cathy Clare Brown

JFHMS Band Director

After studying flute at JMU and marching four seasons with the Marching Royal Dukes, Cathy Clare Brown finished her Bachelor of Music degree at Bridgewater College and began her career as an assistant to her mentor James C. Cathy is a proud Band parent and works behind the scenes as Producer of the JFHMS Musical.   Cathy is married to Steven, and they have two amazing daughters, Morgan (22), and Lily (17).

Favorite quote: “There is no ‘bench’ in Band.

In Band, everyone gets to play”.

Georgia Orfanides

JFHMS Choral Director

Georgia Orfanides is the recently hired Choral Director of JFHMS. She graduated from James Madison University with a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Music Education. During her time at JMU she served as the undergraduate manager/conductor for the Treble Chamber Choir and was a College Chorale Scholar at Otterbein Methodist Church. She has been involved in theater since she was in middle school and has worked as a Teaching Artist for the Fairfax theater company, Moonlit Wings, for the past two years. In her free time she enjoys reading, drawing and volunteering at the Aristocat Cafe.

“A good choir can sing notes in tune. A great choir requires trust and community. When the members of an ensemble trust and respect each other, that is when they are able to communicate a message through the music they are singing”. — Georgia Orfanides
