The 2023 school year is moving right along, and our Bands are as busy as ever. The BHS Marching Band received a Superior rating at VBODA State Marching Assessment, making them eligible to be an Honor Band once again, contingent on their results at State Concert Assessment in March; this capped off a marching season that showed steady growth, and brought out the very best in it’s members both on the field and off.
The JFH Concert Band played a Veteran’s Day performance, and then later the same day the JFH Jazz Band participated in “Jazz in the Middle” at JMU, alongside other local middle school Jazz groups. The Broadway Tree Lighting event was a bright spot in our schedules, sharing Vocal and Instrumental music by 7th-12th grade musicians.
Both JFH and BHS Bands gave warm and wonderful Holiday Concerts, and have musicians who will be participating in upcoming City-County Honors Bands and VBODA District Band events. BHS has one student who earned membership in Senior Regional Orchestra, and EIGHT others who are All State eligible, as a result of their audition success at Districts.
The JFH Beginner Band successfully performed in their first JFH concert, and those fine musicians are heading into 2024 excited about the opportunity to play in the JFH Pep Band at basketball games, alongside their 7th and 8th grade peers. Seventeen NEW 7th and 8th grade musicians also have earned this opportunity, alongside the 6th grade Band. It has been a great year so far!
Our musicians are passionate, dedicated, and talented, and many participate in not only Band, but also Choir and Theater (and many other things!!) Best wishes to the JFH and BHS Choir members in their Honors and District events, and to the cast and crew of “The Addams Family” at BHS, and “Rock of Ages-youth edition” at JFHMS. The 2024 City-County Honors Band will be held at Turner Ashby High School on January 12-13, culminating in a free concert in the TAHS auditorium on Saturday, Jan 13 at 2pm.
