As Spring Sports have taken center stage at BHS, the Athletic Department has put the finishing touches on a very successful 2022-2023 Winter Sports Season. Throughout the winter, there were multiple school records broken and the Gobblers welcome home an individual State Champion in Indoor Track.
Boys Basketball
Sophomore Tristan Yoder became a household name in the area for his stellar play throughout the season. Yoder set the school record for three pointers made in a single game with eight in the Gobblers win over Harrisonburg on February 3rd. Yoder, who garnered First Team All-Valley District Honors, was also the lone member of the BHS Team to be named to the All-Region Team, where he earned 2nd Team honors. Joining Yoder on the All-District Teams were Caleb Barnes (1st Team), Breylon Miller (2nd Team) and Conner Michael (2nd Team).
Girls Basketball
The BHS Girls Basketball team made significant strides in their second season under Head Coach Jeremy Fulk and his staff. The Gobblers appeared in the Region 3C Tournament for the first time in five years, and advanced to the Region Quarterfinals. Sophomore Wren Wheeler was named to the All-Region 2nd Team after her stellar play throughout the Region Tournament. Wheeler was one of five BHS players to receive All-Valley District Honors. Wheeler was joined by Lily Gatesman on the All-District First Team, while Maya Bacon, Lexie Dingus and Lindsey Wimer each received Second Team honors.
Indoor Track
The Gobblers Indoor Track Team has a great winter season as well. Jowell Gonzalez Santiago brings home the most recent BHS State Championship trophy. The BHS Senior set the BHS School record and captured the 500-meter Championship at the State Meet in February. Santiago also set the school record in the 300-meter run during the season. The 4×400 relay team of Jayden Kerr, Walker Knicely, Riley Tinnell and Jowell Gonzalez Santiago put their stamp in the record books with a school record time in the 4×400. Taylor Driver finished the state meet as the runner up in the High Jump. Walker Knicely and Santiago were also Region 3C Champions. Knicely won the Region 3C Pole Vault Championship while Santiago captured the Region Championship in the 500 meters.
Wresting T
he Gobblers wrestling team had a great winter season as well. Junior Jesse Miller finished the 2022-2023 season with 33 pins, which set a new BHS School Record. The Gobblers also had three wrestlers earn All-State Honors with Junior Jackson Wells (3rd Place Finish), Jesse Miller (4th Place Finish) and Junior Feodor Dronov (6th place finish) leading the way for BHS.
Gymnastics
BHS Freshman Ella Strawderman competed in the Regional Gymnastics meet in February. Strawderman finished the District Gymnastics meet in 8th all around and 8th on the beam to qualify for the Region Meet.
Swimming
More School Records were set in the pool by the Gobblers Swim Team. Davis Hinkle posted a school best time in the 100-meter fly. The Gobblers swimmers had a great season, with a host of swimmers winning events and posting personal best times throughout the season.
As the Winter Sports Chapter closes, it will be remembered as one of the most successful collective seasons in Broadway High School history. Congratulations to all the athletes who competed and had great seasons this past winter!
