Fishing with Mike

Mike Merica by Mike Merica

As we slide into summer the spawn is over and you can expect bass to be transitioning into a summer pattern in the Shenandoah River and local lakes.  From reports I’m getting from anglers, the fishing in May was fairly productive.

I didn’t get to fish much in May.  I’ve been having some issues with my left arm.  And now, as I’m writing this report, my wife has taken a fall and broken a couple of bones, so I’ll be at home caring for her until she heals up.

What should you expect as we go into June?  Early morning and evening hours will be preferred times to be on the water.  Bass will move up into shallow water to feed during these low light times of the day.  Top water lures would be the choice during these times.  I recommend buzz baits, whopper poppers, jitterbugs, and frogs if grass is present.  Fish the frog along the edge of the grass.

As the sun gets higher in the sky, bass will move under matts and you will want to fish frogs on top of these mats.  This could produce some exciting blowups.  Another exciting way to catch bass is to fish flats in 6 feet of water or less that has grass.  Throw spinnerbaits, rattletraps, and shallow diving crankbaits.  This should produce a lot of strikes.

Remember, during the hot months of the year fish need oxygen, so you’ll need to fish around current, and current breaks.  I like to target these areas with spinnerbaits, chatter baits, or a square billed crankbait.

If fish aren’t reacting to moving baits, slow down with jigs, or a crawfish on a lead head hook.  Let the current move these lures.  And don’t forget your Senko’s and flukes.  These two lures will catch you a lot of fish during the summer months.

Have a great time on the water this month!  Be safe and watch out for one another!

While driving around in the community have you noticed all the yellow signs?  In John 14:6 Jesus says, “ I am the way, the truth, and the life.  No one can come to the Father except through me.”

What comes to mind when you read that verse?  Jesus is telling everyone that he is the only way to God, and that he will lead you to all truth, and that he is the life … the bread of life.  This verse means nothing until you have confessed your sins before him and asked Jesus to come into your life.  Then this verse will have a whole new meaning to you.

We often think of eternal life as beginning when we die, but in reality, it begins when we receive Jesus Christ as our Savior and Lord.  Gods’ invitation to find eternal life in him is the greatest invitation of all.

Have a great summer!

Mike
