Broadway’s own Linville Creek Church of the Brethren is turning 200, and the whole community is invited to the celebration! On Saturday, October 4, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM (and beyond), the church will celebrate two centuries since Elder John Kline first donated the land for a meetinghouse. That’s 200 years of faith, fellowship, and pie — and they’re pulling out all the stops.
Step Back in Time
History buffs will find plenty to enjoy. Explore informational exhibits, browse the John Kline Historical Room, watch a short film on the church’s roots, or join a guided cemetery tour. The day will also include a dedication of the newly expanded cemetery grounds.
Fun for the Family
There’s no shortage of kid-friendly fun either. Little ones can enjoy face painting, a bounce house, crafts, and even a petting zoo. Young and old alike can warm up their pitching arm at the Dunk Tank – always good for a laugh!
Food, Glorious Food
Of course, no church celebration is complete without food. The youth will tempt you with a bake sale, the Ladies Fellowship will be serving up their famous homemade fruit pies, and lunch will be available starting at 11:00 AM — until the last crumb is gone.
A Sweet Finale
At 2:30 PM, gather on the church lawn for a grand finale: fresh s’mores (yum!) and a concert by the Linville Creek Praise Choir. Music and marshmallows — what better way to end the day?
A Walk Through History
Linville Creek’s story reaches back to the 1700s, when Brethren families first settled in the Shenandoah Valley. Early gatherings took place in swing-wall houses before the congregation built its first meetinghouse in1828 after Elder Kline had gifted the land in 1825. Since then, four meetinghouses have been built — some raised, some lost to fire, all deeply loved. The current building, dedicated in 1956, still stands proudly on that same historic ground.
Come One, Come All!
So bring your family, your friends, and maybe your appetite. This isn’t just a celebration of bricks and mortar — it’s a celebration of community, heritage, and joy that has filled Linville Creek Church of the Brethren for 200 years (and counting).
And the Celebration Continues…
The festivities don’t stop on Saturday. On Sunday, October 5, join the congregation for worship at 10:30 AM, followed by a covered-dish luncheon in the Fellowship Hall. Everyone is welcome!
