Spotlight on the Off Broadway Players

Next up for the OBP: Sherwood: The Adventures of Robin Hood

By Jeff Obenschain

The Off Broadway Players’ last show, Tuesdays with Morrie, was a moving, deeply emotional journey that navigated the heavy subject of terminal illness (ALS) by focusing on Morrie’s commitment to living his final days rather than just dying. Sherwood: The Adventures of Robin Hood, by acclaimed playwright Ken Ludwig, arguably America’s preeminent playwright, is an entertaining and swashbuckling complete opposite. That is one of the reasons I chose this show.

It is a play that reimagines the classic English legend with wit, action, and heart.  Blending daring adventure with sharp humor, this adaptation follows the journey of Robin Hood, a nobleman-turned-outlaw who leads a band of misfits in the Sherwood Forest. Together, they challenge tyranny, defend the oppressed, and outsmart the corrupt forces of scheming Prince John, cruel Sir Guy of Gisbourne, and the unscrupulous Sheriff of Nottingham. While the story remains rooted in its familiar themes of justice and heroism, Ludwig infuses the tale with his own brand of dialogue and comedy that keeps you on the edge of your seat.

Sherwood: The Adventures of Robin Hood features dynamic sword fights, clever disguises, and lighthearted comedy as well as moments of genuine emotional depth. Robin is portrayed not only as a daring hero but also as a reluctant leader grappling with his responsibility and identity. His companions, steadfast Little John, lovely Maid Marian, blossoming Deorwynn, and resolute Friar Tuck, bring both humor and warmth and create a sense of camaraderie that carries throughout the play.

The show features many of the familiar actors you have come to know and love: Richard Clem, Seth Simmers, John McMurray, and RB Propst, among others, but it also introduces some new faces: Sam Cupp and Elizabeth Orr and features many others in the ensemble.  The cast have worked hard to embrace Ludwig’s vision, emphasizing both the play’s physical energy and its comedic elements.  Though the set is simple, the costumes will help transport you to a vivid medieval world, from the lush greenery of Sherwood Forest to the imposing walls of Nottingham and the choreography of fight scenes and ensemble movement, I hope, will add excitement and authenticity.

Sherwood: The Adventures of Robin Hood is family friendly and appealing to audiences of all ages. Its mix of humor and action ensures that the legend of Robin Hood continues to captivate our attention.

We hope that we will see you in the J. Frank Hillyard auditorium on April 24, 25, and 26 and May 1, 2, and 3  For more information about the OBP, showtimes, or to buy tickets visit offbroadwayplayersva.org.

The Off Broadway Players with the help of the school and community present Robin and Tim Turner a check to help defray the costs of ALS equipment and supplies for the family.
