Summer appears to have finally arrived! The weather is finally warming up, with some torrential rains thrown in. Our hay is awaiting a dry spell so it can be cut and baled. It is about armpit high (on me) right about now. It will be a good crop!
My attempts, this year, to grow plants from seed have not been too successful. Some of them are so spindly, I may just resort to buying ready grown! The garden is ready, it has been tilled. I even have a section now for perennials and cutting flowers. I just have to find the time to plant, when it’s not so hot, and WEED! I hate weeding, as Mr. GJ will attest. I weeded my front garden, went to Connecticut for 3 days to visit my son and family, and the bindweed/morning glory, just rebounded with a vengeance! It was like I had never even weeded. It’s on my to do list. Again.
This spring, the grass was so lush, that my horses needed to be muzzled. They had never been bothered before, but one needed a vet visit and meds. He’s fine now, and wears the grazing muzzle without complaint. The other horse is fine, but is getting a muzzle as a preventative. He is not so willing and has ruined two already! Yoshi, my little donkey, steadfastly refuses to keep a muzzle or fly mask on. He lives his life on his own terms!
We had some trees come down recently, with some of the rains and swirling bursts of wind. The most recent was a perfectly healthy tree, at the edge of the woods. I guess the ground was so sodden, that a good stiff wind along the tree line was all it took to bring it down. It landed on the paddock fence, right in the middle, crushing 3 sections in one fell swoop! That was a project for Mr. Green Jeans, along with another tree that cracked, broke, and fell along the driveway. It’s always something.
Speaking of Mr. Green Jeans, along with Father’s Day this month, he is celebrating a birthday. Plus, last month was National Police Week. I totally forgot about Police Week, when writing my column in April for the May issue, so I thought I would do a belated mention this month, for his birthday.
President Kennedy declared May 15 as National Peace Officers Day, and during the week of the 15th of May every year since, it has been known as National Police Week.
Known by Pops/Mr. Green Jeans/Sarge, and I’m sure many other monikers, my husband has been a cop, with several different agencies for almost 45 years. The longest was with the US Park Police, a Federal law enforcement agency, which took him (and us) to 3 states, where the main offices are. He has worked in NY, San Francisco, and Washington, DC. Working the streets, in a car, on motorcycle, and on horseback, has been an adventure. He’s been in the Rose Bowl Parade, patrolled the beaches and tourist areas of SF, the tough streets of Brooklyn, and the historic areas of DC. Having been on many Presidential Protection details throughout several administrations, he had the opportunity to work both demonstrations and parades, along with motorcades, and details greeting dignitaries. While working in DC, he had the opportunity to be present at many history making events. Larry even delivered a baby or two during his career! When retiring as a Sergeant after 31 years, and moving here, he continued to work as an officer for several more years with two local agencies. There are so many more stories to tell, that I will save for another day!
Happy birthday, Father’s Day, and belated Police Week, to my own personal guardian. Happy Father’s Day to my son, and to all the fathers and grandfathers out there!
I hope you all enjoy everything that the month of June has to offer. All is well here, despite a few downed trees, at Mountain Meadows this month……..
