Aaah, school has started, summer is over all too quickly! When I was a kid, school ended third or fourth week of June, and didn’t start up again until September 4. That was my brother’s birthday, and to him, not a nice way to spend the day!
I recall it still being hot, and one year, I wanted to wear one of the few new outfits my mom had bought me, on the first day of school. I still remember it was a grey pleated skirt, with tights, and a button-down shirt. It was hot! The next time I wore that outfit was on a very cold, icy day. I had to walk the 4 blocks to school, as most kids in the neighborhood did. As I turned the corner to the school, I slipped on the ice, fell and ripped my tights and scraped my knees. An inauspicious, and quite embarrassing school day.
Part of the excitement of back to school, is meeting the teacher. My grandson has a great one in his fourth-grade year, Donna Mathias. Her love for children, coupled with her love for animals, and her Pet Club, should make this year a wonderful experience for him.
But, as with most kids, I assume, summer was way too short. There were too many insufferably hot days, and a lot of rain. Along with his many chillin’, couch potato times, we did manage to get in some fun and travels!
Natural Bridge Viriginia Safari Park was fun. It was miserably hot, and when we arrived, we were informed they had an issue with the water, so no bathrooms. The gas station right outside of the park got a lot of business. Despite the heat, the animals were amazing, our car got a little messy, but so what! After that, we went down the road to a Dinoland attraction, then to an air-conditioned restaurant to eat and cool off!
Pops and Callen took a day trip to DC, taking the Metro in, hitting the museums, the Lincoln Memorial, and going to the top of the Washington Monument.
There was a trip to North Carolina beach, and the last week of summer vacation ended at a family reunion in NJ, amusements parks and more beach time at Robert Moses State Park on LI.
Now, reality hits, meet the teacher, piano lessons start up again, and back to school! On the positive (at least to Callen), he will get to see his friends that he missed during the summer!
I hope everyone enjoyed their summer, and you are looking forward to the coming month. Fall is right around the corner. Don’t forget the Broadway Autumn Festival & Antique Car Show is coming up on Saturday, September 13, 9am-3pm. Look for The Chimney Rock Chronicle near J&B Country Store. Stop by and say hi! Bring your story ideas- we’d love to hear them!
All is well at Mountain Meadows tonight……
