As I write this, the snowcrete/snowmageddon of February 2026 has turned into boot sucking mud. Then, came a weather report threatening another Sunday snow. Initially, it was rain, and now wet fluffy flakes in 40-degree temperatures. My son, in Connecticut, has been threatened with up to 15 inches more of the white stuff!
The icy snow we endured was sometimes fun to sled on, walk atop of, and offered people the opportunity to ice skate – either on the roads or an amazingly frozen river!
It also gave me a very scary and bloody faceplant on an ice-covered incline near my house. Immediately after, I ordered several pair of cleats for my boots. They are a definite game changer! The snow was so hard, even ski poles were useless. But cleats? I will NEVER be without them again!
My grandchildren had a ball- here and in New England – sledding and sliding. Callen was a fan of body sledding. I was a fan of staying upright!
County kids were thrilled to have so many snow days in a row! Maybe a few teachers were also!
As I watch these fluffy flakes falling from the sky and melting immediately upon contact with the muddy bog that is our property, I am also happy to see the snowdrops and daffodils forcing their way through the seemingly impenetrable soil. Hope “springs” eternal! We know spring is just around the bend, and it can’t come too soon.
The trees are budding. I cut a few branches of forsythia to force spring to appear a bit sooner in the house. A flower arranging workshop in February, with Anita’s Custom Florals, was just the thing to get rid of the winter doldrums!
The wild birds are breathing a sigh of relief that they can actually see the ground and not have to depend totally on the seed generous homeowners and birdwatchers set out. Every morning, I would have a full tree of varied birds waiting for me to fill the feeder. The barn pigeons were also hoping for some extra. Of course, I obliged.
Another bright spot this month is the expected return of the hummingbirds!
The first day of spring is March 20, the Vernal Equinox – I’m sure we are all eager for it to arrive!
March 17 is St. Patrick’s Day; March 8- International Women’s Day; March 29 – National Mom and Pop Business Owners Day; March 14 – National Pi Day; March 6 – National Dentist’s Day. Just to name a few….
