St. Patrick’s Day Vegetable Pizza

Crescent Rolls (for base layer; could use store bought):

3 c. flour

1 c. warm water

1 pkg. yeast (1 T.)

1 T. sugar

3 eggs, beaten

Whisk yeast and sugar in water. Add eggs and beat together. Let stand 10 minutes.

½ c. sugar

½ c. butter, softened

1 t. salt

Add to yeast mixture.

5 c. bread flour (can use all-purpose)

Add flour to mixture and knead until smooth. Place in a covered container and refrigerate overnight, or up to one week. To bake: divide dough in half. Or for pizza, use what is needed for pan size and bake. Directions for regular crescent rolls: Roll each half in a 12-inch circle and cut into 16 pie wedges (a pizza cutter works great). Roll up each wedge starting at wide end. Place on greased cookie sheets and let rise about 2 hours. Bake at 350°F for 12 to 15 minutes.

Spread (after baked dough is cooled):

8 oz cream cheese

2 T. mayo

1 pkg. zesty Italian dressing mix

Wash and chop variety of green vegetables (bell peppers, cucumbers, broccoli, etc.) and garnish with dried dill weed.

Frankly, I am a little blank for ideas to share with you this month. I welcome your submissions at sarah.witmer@thechimneyrockchronicle.com.

Here are a few foods and sources I have been enjoying lately…

• True Honey teas at truehoneyteas.com. Based out of Lorton, VA, these teas have arrived overnight! The bags include granulated honey, making an intensely flavored and sweetened cup – really, one bag is enough for one quart of tea. Peach is my favorite.

• Azure Standard food supplier. Meeting at the park-n-ride in New Market on a monthly schedule, high quality foods can be ordered online and retrieved from a box trailer truck. I like to order bulk flours, unusual snacks, and other bulk dry staples. Of all things, the Thompson raisins are the best raisins I’ve ever had. Most store-bought cereals are simply not the best ingredients; Azure Standard offers much better options. The New Market location is named The Gathering Place Community Drop at 277 W Old Cross Road, New Market, VA 22844. Chelsey Smith is the drop coordinator. There is also a drop at Hickory Hollow Christian School in Dayton.

• Fresh produce from Jon Henry’s in New Market.

• Sprouts to finish out the winter lacking fresh greens. www.Natureswarehouse.net Order a sprouting screen to fit a wide mouth mason jar to streamline the process.

• Sourdough baking. Sarah Whetzel of Mathias is looking to sell fresh baked sourdough and other baked goods. She has a Facebook page called Dough Creations, as well as public posts on her personal page. H&T Farm Market has her products too.

I’m looking forward to another year of gardening and the changing season. Hoping to plant peas this week. Again, I’m happy to share your recipes and ideas; send to: sarah.witmer (at) thechimneyrockchronicle.com.

Living on a broiler poultry farm in Broadway with my husband and our three children, I enjoy most home arts (except sewing!) - gardening, canning, cooking, and baking. My grandma grew up on Church Mountain and I enjoy spending time and hunting on the family property there.
