Bass Fishing with Mike

Mike Merica by Mike Merica
September 2, 2024
in Sports

As expected, August was hot and humid, and water conditions were low, clear and warm.  The talk among anglers in our area is how low the Shenandoah River is.  Not only the river but local lakes and farm ponds are low.  That can be expected during the summer months, but it seems to get worse with each passing year.

The month of September ushers in the fall fishing pattern.  Fishing in the first part of the month will most likely differ from the last part of the month.  Fish the first part of the month like you did in August.  Use top water lures such as buzz baits and frogs on top of matted grass.  As we get towards the middle and end of the month, shorter days and lower water temperatures will increase bass feeding patterns.  Focus on shallow water with top water lures, such as buzz baits or poppers for early morning.  And spinnerbaits, chatter baits and crankbaits should put a lot of bass in the boat during this time period.

Bass will be feeding, preparing for the colder months ahead.  I believe one of the best fall baits is the square billed crankbait.  It bounces off rocks and wood very well which triggers bass to strike.  With passing weather fronts, slow down with a bottom presentation such as a jig and trailer combination.  Work the jig through rocks and around wood.  Stay close to drop-offs and work them slow.  You should catch your bigger bass with a jig.

After writing this report we received a good bit of rain from hurricane Debbie.  A welcome sight, not just for anglers but for everyone.  Rivers and lakes are back to full pool, just in time for fall fishing.  It’s been a long hot summer and if you are like me, you’re looking forward to a fall fishing pattern.  So be safe, look out for others, and have a great September.

God loves all people, but there is one problem.  Sin separates us from God.  But there is good news.  God made a way for us to be reconciled back to him.  His one and only son Jesus died on a cross.  His blood was shed for you and all people.  He was put in a tomb and on the third day God raised him from the dead.  If you don’t know Jesus as Lord and Savior of your life, I would like to encourage you to think about this.  Confess your sin before him, invite Jesus into your heart and your name will be written in the Lambs Book of Life.

Romans 10:9 – “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”

God bless you all!

Mike
