It sure has been a hot and humid summer, but we should be grateful for all the rain we received. Like I said in the August report, if the rains stop, the rivers and lakes would start clearing up. That took place around mid-August. Clear, hot water makes fishing a little more of a challenge. But there’s good news. We flipped the calendar to September.
Anglers that love to hunt will begin putting away their fishing gear and bringing out their hunting gear. Maybe there will be a few more parking spots at the boat ramps. Fishing should pick up in September; it’s the start of the fall fishing season. Cooler days and nighttime temperatures will begin to drop the water temperature to favor the fish. As this takes place, the fish will respond by feeding more often and may be more aggressive at times to reaction baits. This will most likely take place from the middle to the end of the month. Look for bass to be feeding along banks and on shallow flats that have grass. Bass will be feeding and preparing for the colder months ahead.
I recommend keeping a reaction lure tied on so you can cover a lot of water during cloudy or low light conditions. Spinnerbaits and bladed baits with a trailer are good options. One of my go-to baits for fall fishing is the square bill crankbait.
Bounce the crankbait off rocks and laydowns to trigger a strike. Another good option for fall fishing is the topwater lure, buzz baits, poppers, and frogs around grass. Top waters are used mostly early morning, late evening, but during the fall they’ll produce all day depending on weather conditions.
After this hot summer I’m looking forward to some cool days on the water. Have a great fall fishing season. Be safe and look out for each other.
Over the past five years or more, my wife, Peggy, has had a heart attack and two strokes. It is hard for anyone to be really strong when your world is turned upside down. We want normal, and we want it quickly. We want strength to make it through each moment. I learned to be patient. To wait on God. God has supernatural strength. Whatever struggles you are in, however weak and hurting your heart may be, wait on the Lord. Help is on the way. Psalm 27:14: Wait on the Lord. Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart,
God Bless,
Mike
