On Saturday, March 15, the Broadway High School Debate Team competed at the VHSL Regional Debate Tournament held at Turner Ashby.
Four debaters contributed:
-Freshman Jessica Funk and Leila Haimani performed admirably in Lincoln-Douglas Debate in this first-ever post-season tournament.
-Junior Gabriella Garlock placed second in Student Congress and advanced to the Super Regional tournament.
-Senior, and team captain, Alli Phillips took home first place in Lincoln-Douglas Debate overcoming a field of 16 other competitors and surviving seven rounds of competition.

Assistant coach Abbey Coleman and I could not be more proud of how these debaters performed and their joint efforts resulted in Broadway being the runner-up overall in a field of eight other schools.
Also, back in January, we had our regular season-ending championships with the Shenandoah Valley Forensics League.
There Gabby Garlock took first in Student Congress while Alli Phillips placed 6th. In Policy Debate future BHS students – Caroline Carrier and partner Braelyn Jordan took second.
Broadway placed second, overall, in the team category for Debate at the tournament and was also the top Debate school for the season in the small school category. (Fewer than 13 entries for the entire season.)
It’s been a great year so far and these students continue to impress!
Be sure to wish all of them congratulations and best of luck as we prepare for the next round of VHSL competition – Super Regions on Saturday, April 12th.
