Tim Tough
By: Micah Morris
As a Baseball Coach, Tim Turner preached being mentally tough. It was that toughness that propelled his Broadway teams to success at every level. For Coach Turner, the Broadway Baseball journey started long before the bright lights at Broadway High School, his journey started on the Little League dirt in the Broadway Community Little League.
To this very day, Tim Turner’s name adorns the walls of The Strike Zone, the BCLL training facility in Timberville. Joined by the names of his players, Coach Turner led countless BCLL teams to success for many years. As many of those players grew, Coach Turner climbed the ranks with him, with many of his long-time assistant coaches by his side. Eventually, Coach Turner was named the JV Baseball Coach at Broadway High School and continued that accent to the top of the BHS Varsity coaching ranks. Joined by many of those same players, and adding new faces, Coach Turner pushed the Gobblers Baseball program to new heights of success. In 2017, the Gobblers were Conference 29 Champions, advancing to the Region 3C Tournament. The Gobblers appeared again in the Region Tournament in 2019 where they were just five outs away from a State Tournament berth. As the 2020 season approached, the Gobblers Baseball team looked like a regional favorite and a possible State Championship contender, but before the first pitch could be thrown the entire Spring season was shut down due to the COVID Pandemic. Not to be deterred, Coach Turner and his staff reignited the fire and made another run to the Region 3C Championship game in the COVID-Shortened 2021 season. In 2022, Coach Turner would again advance to the Region 3C Tournament, falling just short of the State Tournament.
Just three years later, having retired from Coaching at BHS, Tim Turner will now turn that mental toughness towards a new fight. In March of 2025 Tim was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, or ALS (baseball fans also know this as Lou Gehrig’s Disease). While Tim remains focused and positive, the entire community now turns our attention to helping Tim and his family. This disease comes with additional costs to maintaining a safe household environment, needs for new transportation methods to accommodate a wheelchair and other mounting needs.
On May 20, during a ceremony at a Broadway High School baseball game, a fundraising effort to help the family during this time of need was started. George Laase (BHS Baseball Coach), Becky Cantrell (BHS Softball Coach), Danny Grogg (BHS Football Coach), Micah Morris (Gobblers Sports Network Owner/Broadcaster) and many other have stepped up to begin working on honoring Coach Turner and starting the fundraising efforts to assist this man, and this family that have been so important to the fabric of the Broadway community for so many years.
The Fundraiser is an ongoing effort to continue to help the Turner family with the costs of this illness. Donations can be made electronically by using Venmo, or donations can be dropped off at Morris Insurance & Financial at 148. N. Main St. in Broadway.
