      In the 18th century, horses and wagons or carriages were the modes of transportation through the valley. With the development of a road system, stagecoaches began travel.

      The advent of affordable automobiles meant fewer horses and more traffic even in the 1920s. Here, two autos travel down the unpaved, one-lane Valley Pike between Harrisonburg and Mount Crawford. The landscape is currently covered with dealers offering new and used automobiles.       Helen Wampler Smith is a native of Mayland VA who currently lives with her husband on Main St. in Broadway. She holds a MA Degree in History from the University of Maryland and currently serves as Board Chair and Exhibit Coordinator at Plains District Memorial Museum in Timberville, VA.
