CELEBRATING 26 YEARS
A KALEIDASCOPE OF COOKIES
Approximately sixty guests visited the Museum on Sunday, Sept. 22 to commemorate the Museum’s 26th anniversary. Fifteen volunteers provided an array of 26 plates of cookies ranging from chocolate chip to moon pies to celebrate each year. The afternoon concluded with a presentation by Greg Owen, local WW II historian, who talked on the German Prisoners of War Camps in the U. S.in the 1940’s and specifically on the one located just west of Timberville. Many in the audience recalled its existence and its impact on the local farmers, businesses, and communities.
A SPECIAL THANK YOU TO ALL WHO PARTICIPATED.
FROM THE MUSEUM’S COLLECTIONS
Recently, Bev Garber, Timberville Town Historian, brought a new donation to the Museum which drew my attention to an often-overlooked collection of Vintage Yardsticks in our business section. The donation was a yardstick from the M and S Corporation located in
Timberville. The building and supplies company was apparently located off Spar Mine Road near what was once Nu Method Cleaners. It is representative of a marketing technique which became popular in the early 1900’s and flourished in the 1930s-40s and beyond…
Yardsticks had been used since the 17th century but in 1883, a Swedish engineer invented the fractionalized stick which was used in America. Because of its length, it became a popular way for businesses, politicians, and other organizations to advertise their name, address and phone number and were often used as giveaways to customers and followers.
The Museum’s collection consists of yardsticks (both metal and wooden) from miscellaneous local businesses including five from Broadway and seven from Timberville. Of these only one continues to exist –the Rockingham Milling Co. in Timberville.
For history buffs, this permanent collection is another valuable tool reflecting the history of our business community. Be sure to look for this exhibit on your next visit to the Museum.
