Weather in April was up and down. It was cool, then it was cold and windy, then it was warm, and then it was hot. Weather plays a big role in the life of a fish, and it affects the spawn. Bass were spawning in April, mainly toward the end, and will continue into the first of May. We didn’t see a lot of rain this spring, so bass should have a good spawn. After the spawn, bass will be in post spawn for about two weeks, and that makes for a challenge to catch them. April was a good time to be on the water. There were a lot of bass caught during the month.
Mid-May bass will enter into a summer pattern, and the tackle bag will be wide open. Bass will be chasing reaction lures, such as spinnerbaits, chatter baits, and small crankbaits. Topwater lures should also be a part of your lure selection. As we begin to fish a summer pattern you will want to focus on flats in five to six feet of water, with the presence of grass, and shallow areas that lead into deeper water. Fish these areas with the lures mentioned above. Watch for perch and bluegill beds, that’s the dinner table for bass, they won’t be far away. Rattletraps and buzz baits are good lures around these areas. When rains come and get the river high and dirty, hit the banks with big spinnerbaits and jigs with a chunk trailer.
Remember, fish are swimmers and they could be anywhere this time of year. You’ll want to cover a lot of water and sooner or later you’ll run into them. May should be a very productive month on the water. So, good luck and have a good month fishing.
