October is upon us – fall festivals, Halloween, and trees changing colors.
The leaves have started their last dance of the season, changing from a drab green to vibrant yellows and oranges, fluttering to the ground in the breeze- a last fling.
This past month included my first time at removing a 6 foot snake out of my chicken coop by myself(!)- I can cross that off my bucket list. Also, and less exciting, was my first time of peeling and freezing 30 pounds of bananas (what was I thinking!) Jon Henry had a hard to resist sale!
Maybe I am getting older, (well, I am) but it seems like the animals require so much more work! Instead of using perches at night, the chickens insist upon sitting on the roof of their little coops, and poop where they sit. Flies congregate, so I keep scraping and spraying. Seems like it has become a daily thing!
As the grass was growing, I started muzzling one of my horses periodically, one morning, I found him trying to pull it off on the fence. I put a stop to that. Then, that night, here he comes, with just the strap on his head, and the muzzle, practically brand new and pricey, in pieces in the field.
Not to be left out, the other guy tries to rub/roll his fly mask off daily, and I have to hunt it down. Sometimes he is successful, and other times, he just parades around, with it askew, like a fashionable chapeau, and one eye peeking out!
While I am searching for that muzzle, Yoshi, the donkey, who surprisingly keeps his mask on, but refuses to be muzzled, is following me, nose to butt – his nose to my butt- with that disdainful look only a donkey can pull off, wondering if I have forgotten his treat! Yup, never dull, NE-VER dull!
News flash! The Mountain Meadows Little Free Library on Hopkins Gap Rd will be undergoing a change, just on the weekends. By the end of the month, the little book barn will be transformed into my daughter’s Flower Moon Farmstand on Saturdays and Sundays, limited hours, for flavored sourdough breads, scones, pumpkin and banana breads, and maybe some salves in season. There will be a lockbox for cash, a QR code for Venmo, and camera surveillance. You can still place orders with her at Flower Moon Remedies on Facebook, and see what is being baked that weekend. Some of her salves and scones can be found at the Wardensville Fall Festival, October 11th and 12th, in my booth of needlefelted sculptures. Wardensville, WV is a great little town. Hope to see you there!
All is well at Mountain Meadows…….
