We are Sam and Kim Wilkins and we are retired full time RVers in search of 70-degree weather. Our home is now a 42-foot fifth wheel.
We sold our home and most of our belongings in order to see what this great United States has to offer by way of beautiful scenery. Along the way we have met some of the nicest people.
I was invited to take a weekend trip to Gwynn’s Island by my friend, Barbara Robbins. They have a festival each summer and I was excited to be able to attend one. Barb’s son, Matthew, and his family also joined in the fun. There were lots of artisans and crafters set up and I enjoyed taking a look at the local creativity. I noticed one of the booths was about oysters so out of curiosity I went over to take a look and a gentleman reached into a bucket of ice and pulled out a fresh cold one, shucked it and handed it to me. I was a little surprised but added a little cocktail sauce and a squeeze of lemon and down it went. It was the freshest tasting oyster I’d ever eaten. He shucked a second and then a third. What a treat!
A former coworker and her husband who live close to Richmond were camping in Edinburg and made the trip to visit with us. Carol and Jeff wanted to see the campground we stayed at during the summer. I hadn’t seen Carol in a year, and it was so great to sit in the shade and catch up. We were coworkers back in the 1990s and we’ve kept in touch all these years. It was so very good to see her and Jeff again.
Lost River Campground threw a Birthday Party for three of their long-term campers which included Sam. They go above and beyond for their friends. There was BBQed chicken and lots of other dishes. Carolyn, David (aka Buckshot) and Sam were treated to their favorite dessert complete with candles.
My sister, Dawn, and her husband brought their grandson, Connor, to visit for a week. They came to the campground to try out the pool. It was a beautiful pool day and Connor, who is a very active 6-year-old, wore me out splashing and swimming.
My granddaughter, Penelope turned six and her birthday party was at the cutest little bowling alley in Mount Jackson. Shenandoah Bowling Lanes was built in 1948 and is still going. The “littles” enjoyed the duck pins, pizza and cupcakes. Happy Birthday Poppy!
Our son, Sam Jr. and his family brought us some fresh mushrooms; it is a great year for them with all the rain followed by hot weather. Sam and I decided to try our hand at it. I found my very first wild mushroom all by myself. Not bad for a 66-year-old retiree!
While enjoying the great outdoors and bounty from the earth I am reminded once again just how very blessed we are to be living this full time RV lifestyle. Every time I write this article those reminders make me so very thankful for what God had created and allowed me to be a part.
Blessings till next time,
Kim
