      Bass Fishing with Mike

The first week of May the rains came.  But it was just enough to keep our local lakes and the Shenandoah River in good fishing condition.  Based on my time on the water and reports from other fishermen, anglers were having success on the Shenandoah River and local lakes.

By Memorial Day weekend, fish are coming out of a spawn/post-spawn period.  For some anglers June is the start of fishing season.  And for others it’s the end of hunting season.

One thing is for sure, you don’t have to drive very far to get to a fishing hole.  The Shenandoah River and Lake Laura are nearby, and with an hour’s drive you can be at Lake Frederick near Front Royal.  Also, there is Kimsey’s Run Lake and Parker Hollow dam in West Virginia.  You’ll need a West Virginia fishing license for those.

June will see water temperatures rise and fish will be going into a summer pattern.  Early morning, and late afternoon and evening hours will be the best time to be on the water.  In the low light times of the day bass will move up into the shallows to feed.  During these times I would start with top water lures, buzz baits, poppers and frogs.  If no success, try spinnerbaits, shallow diving crankbaits and chatter baits.

As the sun and water temperatures rise, back off the shallows and fish a little deeper, just off the flats.  Look for grassy areas.  Anglers tend to shy away from these areas because of cleaning off their lures.  These areas hold a lot of fish.  Try Texas rigged worms and grubs, and use spinnerbaits and rattletraps along the edges.  Remember, during the summer months fish like to be around current, so fish the riffles and rapids.  Flukes and Senko’s will catch a lot of fish in these areas.

Be safe on the water and have a great summer.

I like quiet mornings on the water.  It’s my time that God gives me to be alone with him, and a time to reflect on his creation and his love for us.  I also like to fish for bass, it’s my hobby.  Maybe your hobbies offer you the same enjoyment.  But our hobbies aren’t who we are, they are only what we like to do.

God is more interested in who we are, then what we like to do.  He calls us to be his children.  The only way this is possible is when we confess our sins before him, invite Jesus into our hearts, turn from our sins and follow the ways he teaches in the Bible.

I John 4:15 – All who confess that Jesus is the Son of God, have God living in them, and they live in God.

In what ways can you see God in every detail of your life?

      May God Bless You All!

      Mike
