May turned out to be a productive month on the Shenandoah River. The spawn/post spawn came to an end in the first weeks of the month. This triggered the bass to begin feeding. Then we got four to five inches of rain, which blew the river out of its banks. I just hope a lot of the fry weren’t washed away. If we can keep the rains coming and the water levels stable, that could set the tone for a great summer of fishing.
What to expect for June? Bass will be in their summertime pattern, which means the best time to be on the water is early morning or late evening. That’s not to say you can’t catch them during the day. During the summer months, some of the biggest bass are caught in the middle of the day.
Lure selection is going to be wide open. I would begin with a topwater presentation in the shallows, and as bass move out into deeper water, I would target them with a spinnerbait or crankbait. Some days, it seems that there’s not a fish to be found. That’s when you need to switch to a jig with a chunk trailer, or a Texas rigged worm, and I know the Ned rig is a go-to bait. If the rains keep coming and water levels stay up you can’t beat a spinnerbait in these conditions.
June is the start of fishing for a lot of anglers, so if you are a summertime fisherman your time is here. So, tie on some lures, get out there and enjoy the summer. Be safe and watch out for each other.
In John 14:6, Jesus says,” I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.” What comes to mind when you read this verse? Jesus is telling everyone that he is the only way to God. And that he will lead you to all truth, and that he is the life, the bread of life. This verse means nothing until you have confessed your sins before him and asked Jesus to come into your life. Then this verse will have a whole new meaning to you.
We often think of eternal life beginning when we die, but in reality, it begins when we receive Jesus Christ as our own Savior and Lord. God’s invitation to find eternal life in him is the greatest invitation of all!
God Bless,
Mike
