Fishing with Mike

Mike Merica by Mike Merica
June 29, 2023
in Columns

I didn’t get to fish much in June.  But reports from other anglers and from my time on the water, June seemed to be a slow month on the Shenandoah River and local lakes.  I believe that it was due to bass being in the post spawn stage, and with water levels being so low fish just weren’t that active.  If you like fishing in the hot summer months your time is here.

What to expect in July?  Fish in the Shenandoah River and local lakes will be in a summer pattern.  Water levels will be low and water temperatures will be warmer, so I would begin fishing moving water such as riffles and rapids.  Because of the higher oxygen levels in these areas, you should find plenty of fish but most will be on the smaller size.

Target these areas with small crankbaits and spinnerbaits.  Top water poppers work great in these areas.  As most of you know the best times to be on the water is early morning and late evening, fish will be more active at these times.  Fish flats and channel banks that have grass or some type of structure, such as wood or rocks.  I would begin with top water lures; buzz baits and poppers work good in these areas.

If the top water bite is not on, go to reaction lures such as spinnerbaits, chatter baits, square bill crankbaits, and my favorite the rattle trap.  Try different retrieves.  Slow them down and speed them up, let the fish tell you how they want it.    And if you know of deeper pockets on the river, target these areas with a jig with a chunk, grubs, or Texas rigged worms.  So, get out on the water this summer, have fun, be safe and try to learn something new about fishing!

The bible tells us that Jesus prayed often and alone.  As followers of Jesus, prayer should be the number one priority in our life.  It’s that connection between us and God.  God desires nothing more than Christians coming to him in prayer.  So, I would like to encourage you to pray often.  Pray for your church, pray for our nation, pray for those that don’t know Jesus, and pray for yourself.  Set time aside daily to spend alone with God.

No matter how confusing this life can be at times, we don’t have to face life alone.  The Spirit and the Son are praying for you today.  Our Lords encouragement to us is clear, always pray and don’t give up.

Philippians 4:6 – “Don’t worry about anything; instead pray about everything.  Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done.”

God Bless you all!

Mike
