Hello Friends,
Happy Thanksgiving! I’m glad Thanksgiving is in November. Although there is much to be grateful for all year long, November is especially full of wonderful things: cooler weather, brilliant color, extra family time, and long, cozy evenings, to name a few.
We made the first fire in the woodstove this past Friday evening. The 30-degree nights and 50-degree days cooled things down quite dramatically. There is no heat warmer than woodstove heat—just ask our two cats!
Right before the frost, our long dormant tomatoes decided they finally wanted to grow. I was able to pick a few before the temperatures fell below freezing. Except for the basil, the other herbs seem to be weathering the cold fairly well so far. I did bring the parsley and lavender inside. I’m also trying to winter half a dozen geraniums in the garage.
Both our oldest daughter and I decided to make homemade vegetable soup this weekend. The recipe we use is a variation of one my mom used to make. Mom and I had a tradition that each time she made veggie soup; she’d save a tablespoon of each of the vegetables out for me and put them in a teacup. I’d eat them slowly, savoring every bite of the corn, peas, carrots, and beans (she drew the line at raw potatoes!). Ah, the things that stick in our memories!
I hope you and your family have a most wonderful Thanksgiving season. Stay safe, well, and curious! And I hope the stories in this month’s Chronicle help warm your chilly days!
Until next time,
Tammy
