Shenandoah Valley Orchards: Quality Fruit From the Shenandoah Valley

Headquartered in Timberville Virginia, Shenandoah Valley Orchards stands as a testament to the rich agricultural heritage of Virginia. Jamie Williams, the General Manager of the operation, has been at the helm since 1998, overseeing a sprawling 1,500-acre orchard dedicated primarily to apple production. Under his guidance, Shenandoah Valley Orchards has become a beacon of quality in the region, known not only for its delicious apples but also for its commitment to sustainable farming practices.

For Williams, the most rewarding aspect of his work is seeing the fruits of his labor—quite literally—from start to finish. “It’s great to be able to ride across all the property we own and just know that we’re doing something positive,” he says. “We’re keeping it for farmland.” However, he also acknowledges the challenges of balancing growth with sustainability, especially as residential areas encroach on farmland.

Shenandoah Valley Orchards employs around 50 full-time local workers who focus on the maintenance of the orchards, including pruning, fertilizing, and mowing. During the peak harvest season, the workforce swells to 250 as seasonal workers are brought in to help with harvesting and packing the fruit. Pruning and spraying are critical to ensuring the quality of the apples, with Williams emphasizing the importance of keeping insects and viruses at bay to prevent crop loss.

In today’s rapidly evolving agricultural landscape, Williams is keenly aware of the need to adapt. The lifespan of a commercial apple tree, once planted, is about 20 years. With technological advancements such as trellising, trees can begin fruiting as early as four years after planting, significantly earlier than the seven to eight years for freestanding trees. This kind of innovation allows Turkey Knob Growers to remain competitive while maintaining their commitment to quality.

The quality of Shenandoah Valley Orchards apples is renowned, not just in Virginia, but across the country. Williams attributes this to the unique limestone soil of the Shenandoah Valley, which he believes enhances the flavor of the apples. Additionally, the ability to pick fruit at the optimal time for eating, rather than shipping it unripe, ensures that consumers get the best possible product.

“We can pick it at optimum eating quality,” Williams explains. “Versus someone else picking it too early before it’s matured to that eating quality.”

Shenandoah Valley Orchards has also made strides in its marketing efforts, aiming to increase awareness of Virginia as a top apple-producing state. Williams is proud of the fact that their apples can be shipped anywhere in the country, including as far as Hawaii, and invites locals to visit their Timberville market, open Wednesday through Saturday, to experience the fresh produce firsthand.

One of the most intriguing aspects of Turkey Knob Growers is their approach to pollination. Over the years, they have significantly reduced the number of beehives brought in for pollination, relying more on natural pollinators from the surrounding woods. This method not only saves costs but also supports local ecosystems.

Looking to the future, Williams acknowledges the challenges posed by a decreasing labor pool and the potential for mechanization in the industry. While he sees technology and automation as inevitable, he also recognizes that the human touch is still crucial in many aspects of the business. The labor force is changing, with workers becoming more technologically savvy, but the physical demands of agriculture remain.

As Turkey Knob Growers continues to evolve, Williams remains focused on preserving the land and ensuring that the orchard remains a viable and sustainable business for generations to come. “We make our money in three months,” he says, reflecting on the intense work periods during harvest. But it’s clear that for Williams, the rewards of this work extend far beyond the financial.

For residents of Broadway, Timberville and the surrounding areas, Turkey Knob Growers offers more than just apples. It represents a commitment to local agriculture, sustainability, and a way of life that is deeply rooted in the Shenandoah Valley. Whether you’re looking for a fresh apple or a beautifully packaged gift box, a visit to Turkey Knob Growers is an opportunity to taste the best of what Virginia has to offer.
