A Twist on a Timeless Classic
by Jeff Obenschain
Each holiday season, audiences across the country are reminded of the power of community, kindness, and second chances through It’s a Wonderful Life, a timeless masterpiece with an iconic star. Frank Capra’s 1946 big-screen adaptation is based on The Greatest Gift, a 1943 short story by Philip Van Doren Stern. For the nine people on the planet who are not familiar with the movie, It’s a Wonderful Life follows the story of George Bailey, a New York man who wants nothing more than to get out of his small town and see the world. Various events conspire to keep him there and lead him directly to the one thing he wants to avoid most: domesticity. After years of running a small savings and loan-style company that helps ordinary people afford houses and avoid renting hovels from the greedy Henry Potter, George suffers a calamity at the hands of his lovable but bumbling Uncle Billy. Angered by the sacrifices he has made and the circumstances that have kept him trapped in Bedford Falls, a desperate George is driven to the only place he has left to go: prayer. Receiving no immediate answer, George heads to a bridge intending to end his life because his life insurance is worth more than he is. Enter Clarence, George’s guardian angel, who transports him to an alternate timeline, one in which George never existed. He does this to prove to George that he truly has a wonderful life, if not the one he wanted.
This November, the Off Broadway Players will stage an adaptation of The Greatest Gift entitled It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play by Joe Landy. As reimagined by the author, you enter the studios of WBFR radio in New York City on Christmas Eve 1946, where a group of actors perform a live radio version of the story to be broadcast from coast to coast. The stage is set with microphones, sound effects tables, and actors in period costumes, each playing multiple characters. This production invites you to step back in time, as if you’re attending a live radio recording at the height of the golden age of broadcasting. Instead of cinematic visuals, the story unfolds through voices, sound effects, and your own imagination. What makes the radio play format so special is the way it celebrates the rich art of storytelling itself. You become part of the experience, listening intently as voices and sounds paint vivid pictures in your mind. The actors’ versatility is center stage as they switch between characters, accents, and emotions before your eyes.
At its heart, It’s a Wonderful Life: A live Radio Play, remains the same heartfelt story of George Bailey, a small-town man whose selflessness touched countless lives in the community of Bedford Falls. When George faces despair and contemplates giving up, a second-class angel named Clarence shows him what the world would have been like if he had never been born. Through this journey, George learns the true value of his life and the lives of those around him.
This version still conveys the timeless message of the original: that every life matters, that kindness multiplies, and that even in our darkest moments, hope and love can prevail. In today’s fast-paced world, this message feels as poignant and necessary as ever. To see that George’s existence, filled with ordinary struggles and unnoticed sacrifices, is actually extraordinary and deeply meaningful.
Five actors, a stage manager, and a Foley artist will provide all the voices and sound effects heard in the radio shows of the time. Richard Clem, a well-known face on our stage, is joined by Laura Fly, Cory Tinkham, Joe Appleton, Ian Cherry, and RB Propst, all of whom have been involved in previous productions. They are joined by Elizabeth Jerenski, who makes her Off Broadway Players debut! They take the stage on November 14th, 15th, 21st, and 22nd at 7:00 pm and on November 16th and 23rd at 3:00 pm. Tickets are available at the box office, but we recommend you reserve your seats by purchasing them online at www.offbroadwayplayers.org.
It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play brings the classic story to life in a uniquely theatrical way, combining nostalgia, imagination, and the magic of live performance. What better way to begin the Christmas season than to see a new twist on an old tale that will, hopefully, delight us and remind us, “No man is a failure who has friends?” And in the warm glow of the stage lights, surrounded by laughter and applause, we hope that you can’t help but feel that truth.
