June 11, 1960—Timberville bought the water company. The town already owned 50 shares. It bought 224 shares for $263 a share. The facilities and assets were appraised at $58,912. Before that, a well provided water for a number of homes including the John Hoover home (Mayor MacCauley), the George Crist home (fourth house on C Street on the right from Main Street) and the C.C. Driver home.
On April 1, 1904—a Literary Society meeting was held. The debate was “Women should enter public life.” The affirmative side won. The judges decided women should enter public life.
June 1, 1932 – A band concert was held on the street tonight.
July 8, 1936 – People are being overcome by the head in the community and many deaths are reported in the cities.
Dec. 2, 1926 – Broadway and Timberville basketball teams played the deciding county league game in the Bridgewater College gyn. Broadway won 16 -4.
December 13, 1931 – Rev. Phillip Harner preached the sermon on the fiftieth anniversary of the laying of the cornerstone of the Reformed church. It was started in 1881 and dedicated in 1884.
The Timberville Fire Department was founded in 1916. George Bull was the first chief. It disbanded in 1919 and reorganized in 1947. Lawn parties started in 1947 as near as wel can tell.
On the night of May 15, 1903 the Timberville Brass Band came out onto the street for a musical event.
On May 6, 1904, a Literary society meeting was held. The debate was “There is more pleasure in memory than in hope.” The judges decided in favor of the affirmative side that there is more pleasure in memory.
June 17, 1928—a medicine show was held tonight near Lokey’s Garage. It lasted until 10:30 (Simmers’ Garage)
Monday, June 28, 1926—The first Chautauqua program for this year was given at 2:30 today in the tent in the northwest corner of the Brethren Church yard. The next program was given at 8:00 o’clock tonight. They were well attended.
June 11, 1932 – a lawn party was held at the Timberville school house tonight for the benefit of county nurses. About $160.00 was raised.
The Reformed Church (now the UCC) began construction in 1881. It was dedicated June 1, 1884.
