      Vase & Vine

Owner Jennifer Phillips and designer Anita Kline

There is a quaint little cottage building on Main St in Mt. Jackson. It has been purchased by the Holtzman Oil family, and completely restored to the way it looked in the 1930’s. A descendant of the Dawson family recently came to the shop with a photo of the gas station as it originally looked. A member of their family originally built it and ran a Pure Oil station there.

There are now bright red reproduction gas pumps (ornamental), blue street lamps, and copper details. It is now a brighter version of its original self, keeping its cottage style details.

In its new incarnation, the former gas station is now the new home of Vase & Vine, a flower shop owned by Timberville residents Dale and Jennifer Phillips, with Anita Kline as their main floral designer.

That Dawson family photo hangs in a place of honor in Vase & Vine. A full-service flower shop, Vase & Vine will make arrangements, silk or live, for all occasions and events. Valentine’s Day is coming up in 2 weeks, and the shop is gearing up for all the orders coming in. Delivery is also offered as one of their services. Place your orders now!

Along with flowers and dried arrangements, Jennifer carries local artisans’ creations, including Bev Garber’s beautiful wood lathe bowls, Bruce Dellinger’s 2022 calendars, and Isle Candle Co. It’s the perfect one stop shopping – flowers and unique gifts.

When asked how she came to open a flower shop, Jennifer said she always wanted to own a shop. For a while, she and her youngest sister, Jillian, co-owned a small teachers’ supply store in Harrisonburg called The Teacher’s Aid. Recently, Jennifer’s twin bought Elkton Florist, now known as Floral Expressions with Jolene. That got her thinking she would like to do the same on this side of the county.

Jennifer says “For the past year, we’ve been researching locations as well as working with my sister to learn everything I could about flowers and flower arranging from her. I love all forms of art, from drawing, painting, sewing, working with stained glass, weaving baskets, etc, so learning to arrange flowers and create beautiful pieces has come naturally to me.”

“We opened Vase & Vine on December 1, 2020. Dale and I have really enjoyed the journey and process of getting the store up and running. We hired Anita Kline as our main floral designer. She has many years of experience and is passionate about arranging flowers and creating beautiful pieces. Anita, Dale, and I have had several conversations over the past few weeks and together our ultimate goal is to make people’s day brighter and better through flowers.”
The shop is in a great location, and will get a lot of traffic off the interstate and from people passing by to and from Bryce and Orkney Springs.

Floral designer Anita Kline is also a woman of many talents, living with her husband on his family’s beef cattle farm in Timberville. She says, “From driving forklifts to poultry farming to working retail to dog grooming, I take pride in working hard and doing the best job I can, no matter what it is. It took me 38 years to honestly LOVE what I do. I’m there and it’s awesome!’

Anita learned her floral skills when she was a child helping her Grandma Shipe with her flowers, from watering her dahlias and gladiolas with her special “tea” of cow patties and water to arranging cut flowers. The women in her family knew everything about flowers and Anita absorbed it all over the years. She also worked at a local greenhouse and landscaped with them in NOVA. So, flowers are in her DNA!

Jessica Blevins works the counter at Vase & Vine, helps Anita with arrangements and delivers. Jennifer and Dale work their day jobs and come in after to help wherever needed. Jennifer designs arrangements, Dale also makes deliveries. Anita says “We are a great team! We all work together. We are family!”
After Valentines’ Day, the shop plans to open the left bay of the shop to use as a classroom. There will be classes on making terrariums, live wreath classes, container classes, etc. Along with displaying and selling unique, locally made items you won’t find in a chain store, showcasing the talent that abounds in the Shenandoah Valley is something that Vase & Vine is happy to give a platform to.

Drop in, check it out, say hi, and place an order!

Stay Tuned for what’s to come!
