A homestead on a hill in Fulks Run is where Hannah Horst is making her dream come true.
Having been on a medication for anxiety since a young child, several years ago, soft spoken Hannah decided there had to be a better and healthier way. Her search led her down a path learning about herbs and natural methods, in hopes of replacing traditional pharmaceuticals in her own life.
“I talked to some mentors, and they said, hey, try some herbs, and it worked for me! I always enjoyed working with herbs after that, and I always enjoyed gardening. I try to grow my own herbs, when I can. I just want to help people – that is my main goal with this.” Her new business is Horst Herbs, LLC.
Today, many people are leaning toward getting away from traditional pharmaceuticals, and Hannah would like to help them holistically.
Over the past several years, all while raising her small family, Hannah has studied and trained, becoming board certified, and attaining a Doctorate of Natural Medicine, through the New Mexico Rockwell School of Holistic Medicine. The goal is to become known as a natural health provider. In Virginia, you can call yourself a naturopath, but other states don’t accept the term, if you are not a state licensed MD, so Natural Health Provider is the title she goes by. Having attended classes and programs since 2018, she is also licensed by GHA-Global Healthcare Accreditation, certified by AANWP- American Association of Natural Wellness Practitioners, and an Associate Member of the American Herbalists Guild.
From her website – “I’m a clinical herbalist, board-certified natural health practitioner, certified holistic health coach, and licensed ecclesiastical holistic health provider, dedicated to helping you find your natural path to wellness.”
She found lavender, lemon balm, and chamomile as her go-to herbs for her own anxiety, mainly in teas. She makes teas and tinctures, depending on the client’s preference. All her herbal products are “small batch made here in the Shenandoah Valley.”
Skin balms, tinctures, and salves are her specialty, in her online shop. Occasionally, Hannah’s Horst Herbs LLC can be found at local vendor shows.
As a young mom, with 3 small children that she homeschools, Hannah’s plate is very full. She and her husband Samuel, have a working farm. In addition, Samuel owns and operates Horst Concrete.
Hannah’s husband is working on an office space for her on their farm, where she is hoping to see clients. She says, “right now I am doing everything virtually, since I don’t have a designated space. One of my goals is to be able to do house calls. I am not quite ready for that, but that is something in the future I hope to do.”
“A question I get asked a lot is, what can I see you for? What can I use herbals for? Colds, flu, pain, chronic issues- I can work with your doctor, if they are receptive to that. I am definitely happy to reach out to the doctors, and see if they are willing to work with me. I can run labs, saliva hormone tests, check mineral levels. I’ve had a lot of training on hormone panels.”
