June is upon us. In a few days, school will be out for the summer! Remember the old rhyme? “No more pencils, no more books, no more teacher’s dirty looks!” No offense to the teachers out there, who are probably equally relieved and more than ready to have the summer off!
Along with working in the garden and helping with the chickens more often, my grandson will have to be kept busy this summer. His favorite thing to do is “chill”, and he will do some of that, but we have a list of places to visit.
There is definitely a beach trip or two this summer, but one of his favorite things to do is explore museums and learn about local history- particularly the Civil War.
Having ancestors in both the Civil and Revolutionary Wars, and World War I, I enjoy going to these places too.
Recently, the New Market Battlefield had a commemorative weekend that we were lucky enough to attend. (See my article about it this month).

Callen got to learn a lot, as did we all. He also got to dress up in an outfit and hold the rifle, which made the history all the more real for him. A relative on my father’s side was a Zouave with a NY Infantry Regiment. Unfortunately, there were no Zouaves present that day, but there is one figurine in one of the dioramas inside the museum.
It is always interesting to hear and learn history from the perspective of the state where it occurred. In my school experiences, history class was colored to represent where we lived. The true stories of the Civil War were glossed over or never learned.
Since we are always looking for things to do over the summer break – if you have a favorite place to visit, message The Chimney Rock Chronicle Facebook page, or me at mountain.meadows@yahoo.com.
We are always open to suggestions!
Happy Father’s Day to all the fathers and father figures out there. Flag Day and Juneteenth are also being celebrated this month.
June is full of holidays you’ve probably never heard of- National Dinosaur Day, World Reef Awareness Day, National Cancer Survivors Day, National I Love My Dentist Day, National Hug Your Cat Day, World Environment Day, National Strawberry Rhubarb Pie Day, Yarn Bombing Day, International Axe Throwing Day, National Megalodon Day, National Take Your Dog to Work Day, National Family Owned and Operated Businesses Day, International Asteroid Day, and SO many more!!!
If you see Pops/Mr. Green Jeans out and about in June, say Happy Birthday!
All is well here at Mountain Meadows, hope you have a wonderful June, see you in July!
